You’ve managed the feat of purchasing your dream home. Now how do you style it?

Zero in on lifestyle and interests

“Designing a home should be an exciting journey rather than an overwhelming task. I often advise homeowners to start by reflecting on their lifestyle, interests and personal taste,” Yarbrough says.

“Consider what activities will take place in each room and how you want to feel when you’re in them. Allowing your lifestyle and preferences to guide the aesthetic and vision ensures a space that truly feels like home.”

Select statement furniture

“I often encourage a client to identify a statement piece of furniture that resonates for them in each space,” she says. “This could be a large, soft, comfortable U-shaped couch that invites conversation and relaxation, or perhaps an intricate bar cart with complementing bar stools that sets the tone for entertaining guests.

“Choosing such a piece not only anchors the room stylistically but also helps determine how the space will be used and experienced.”

Aim for the overall feel

“Once you have your focal piece selected, consider how you want to feel in that particular space,” Yarbrough says. “Do you envision a cosy retreat with warm tones and plush textures, or a bright and airy atmosphere with clean lines and minimalist décor? Let these preferences guide your colour palette, furniture choices and overall aesthetic.”

Practicality

“Think about the practical aspects of each room. How will you use the space on a daily basis? Will it be a place for work, relaxation, socialising, or all of the above? This functional consideration ensures that your design not only looks great but also supports your daily activities seamlessly.

“By starting with a focal piece you love and allowing your lifestyle and personal taste to shape the aesthetic and functionality of each room, the design process becomes an exciting journey.”

Don’t just go for the latest trends

“While staying updated with design trends is important, it’s equally important to infuse spaces with your personality and way of life,” Yarbrough says. “Trends come and go but a home that reflects its inhabitants, character and stories stands the test of time.

“By blending personal touches with timeless design elements, you can create spaces that are not only tasteful and timeless but also deeply meaningful to you.”

Timeless versus on-trend colour palettes

Classic colours can be refreshed with accent pieces

“We are currently seeing a resurgence towards earthy tones, warm browns, muted greens and terracotta burnt oranges which create a restful, grounded space. These colours reflect a desire for tranquility and connection with nature.

“However, classic colour palettes like crisp whites, soothing blues and warm neutrals remain timeless additions to any home. These versatile hues provide a timeless backdrop that can be easily refreshed with accent pieces and accessories as trends evolve.”

Consider black with caution

“Black interiors can be incredibly sophisticated and dramatic when executed thoughtfully. Contrary to the misconception that black makes rooms feel smaller, it can actually create a sense of depth and intimacy when balanced with ample natural light and strategic use of contrasting colours and textures.

“Incorporating reflective surfaces and statement lighting can further enhance the allure of black interiors, transforming them into captivating spaces full of depth and character.”

Make a small room appear bigger

“In small living spaces, maximising functionality and minimising clutter are key,” Yarbrough says. “Opt for multi-functional furniture pieces that serve dual purposes such as storage ottomans or nesting tables.

“Embrace vertical space with wall-mounted shelves and mirrors to create the illusion of height and openness. Incorporating light, neutral colours and strategic lighting can visually expand the space, making it feel more airy and spacious.

“Shades like soft whites, gentle greys and light beiges will help to reflect natural light and create an airy ambiance. Pairing these with strategic lighting fixtures such as sleek floor lamps or pendant lights can illuminate corners and visually enlarge the room.”

Foundational pieces versus decorative

“Investing in quality, timeless pieces like a comfortable sofa, durable dining table and versatile storage is essential for longevity and enduring style. These foundational pieces form the backbone of your home’s aesthetic and should be prioritised in your budget.

“On the other hand, decorative accents and trend-driven items can be refreshed more frequently to keep your space feeling current without breaking the bank.

“Beyond decor staples like artwork, throw cushionscandlesticks and statement lighting, incorporating personal momentos, heirlooms, vintage pieces and unique finds from travels can infuse a space with warmth and character.

“Consider incorporating live plants to bring life and vitality into your home, along with sentimental objects that tell your story and evoke cherished memories.

“A curated mix of meaningful items transforms a space into a true reflection of its inhabitants and will foster a sense of belonging and comfort.”
